In the early 1900s, glue was commonly made from animal byproducts, including proteins found in milk. The dairy company Borden became involved in producing adhesives and eventually developed a household glue product.

Many people know Elsie the Cow, the famous Borden mascot introduced in the 1930s. Less well known is her husband, Elmer the Bull.
When Borden introduced its white household glue in 1947, it named the product after Elmer the Bull. The name was a playful nod to the fact that glue historically came from animal products, while also connecting it to the company's well-known dairy mascots.

Was safer than many earlier adhesives

Today's Elmer's glue is no longer made from animal products. Modern versions are primarily synthetic adhesives based on polymers such as polyvinyl acetate (PVA), making them safer, more consistent, and easier to manufacture.

The iconic orange cap on school glue bottles wasn't part of the original design. It became a recognizable feature over the years and is now almost as famous as the glue itself.
So the short version is: Elmer's Glue was named after a cartoon bull from a dairy company's advertising campaign, and the brand grew from a milk-company side business into one of the most recognizable glue brands in the world. 🐂🧴
